Vault (Tape) @Mon

This is the VicNode storage type for the dissemination, publication and preservation of research data provided by the Monash University operating centre.

Your data can be stored for years and still be available when needed. This storage can be accessed from your own NeCTAR VM as a NFS mount, or through an internet browser service like Aspera or MyTardis.

If you are the research data owner, you are able to manage and control access to your data. This type of storage provides the highest level of security and protection for your data. As the storage media is tape, there may be a considerable delay in recalling data to disk for direct access. Better recall performance can be obtained by using Zip or Tar to bundle files together prior to storage.

Services:

This storage type offers a number of access and transfer services that help you best utilise this storage offering. There are hosted services run by the university operating centre and services that you manage yourself.

Kind of data use Completed data collections that are infrequently accessed
Data expected to change No
Data Protection Two sets of the data are stored on tape. Checksums are applied to data at a block level when data is first ingested. Each block in subsequent copies of the data is also check-summed. These sums are checked periodically.
Access to previous versions Users can request restoration of last backup where <30 days
Data Custodian access Mediated access through a VM, or by VicNode operated user interfaces
Data User access management
Managed by Data Custodian
Available access protocols
NFS (NeCTAR VM mount), HTTPS (Aspera, MyTardis)

Technology @Mon
Vault storage uses an IBM SONAS high performance parallel file system and a matching TSM automatic tape library (ATL) as a hierarchical storage management system. Access is made available through the NFS protocol. Vault data that is not regularly accessed may be moved to tape until it is next required. There may be a considerable delay in recalling data to disk for direct access. Better recall performance can be obtained by using Zip or Tar to bundle files together prior to storage.
